As long as you remain in the shell (at that level), the environment will
have what you just put in.
When you exit, you return to the parent, and there is no reverse transfer
of information.

Try this:
Type command.
Type set myname=Christof
Type set.

See? It is there. 
Now type exit.
Type set. <G>
