Actually, Clarence and Ricsi and Glenn posted comments in response to
my question.
Myself, I have but a dim grasp of these technical details--being
just an ordainary DOS user.
I was having environment problems and got out of space errors. The fix
was to add this line to my config.sys:
SHELL=C:\command.com /P/e:512
That solved my problem.

Dear Sam E:
I was not really reading the Digest for a little while in detail.
Therefore I got you confused with Sam H. I tried your "fix" and it
seems to have worked for the time being. Perhaps it is not a cure-all
for everybody. Nevertheless, for my needs I think it will be sufficient
for the time being. I will try it out in a practical way for a while.
Thanks Clarence and others for the suggestions.
Yours,
Thomas
