CD? I thought we were talking about soundcards (ie. playing WAV, MIDI, MP3
etc.) here ;-)
Anyway, Clarence is correct. Originally one needed drivers for cards. Then
came the "advanced" age of SoundBlasters and often all you needed was to
set the environment variable (although the program can guess - that's why
it often works anyway if the program is made to guess). Some
programs/games require that you set an initial volume on your card but
that's it (only for MIDI in my experience).
Now with these new cards we are once again back to the 80's with drivers
needed. And PnP which IMNSHO is a load of crap since cards that are NOT PnP
are just as easy to change (jumperless cards that is).

Exactly, in a sense I pitty the people who don't have SB 16 compatible
cards (such as myself - yeah that's right a SB 128 PCI isn't 100%
compatible, only a SB16 is).
Anyway I might have the correct drivers now ("illegally" downloaded
<BG>) so I might soon be able to use it in DOS :)
