So you don't waste any effort searching further, I'll tell up up front:
It is not the jpg files. Arachne has previously had no problem
converting them to BMP... like I said, I'd visited the site previously
and had no problems.
And, just to double check, I took a look at the files using GW and they
are just fine ... the same jpgs Arachne correctly rendered previously.
I'm not a happy camper. Software which isn't built by Microsoft should
not behave like it is "wearing out." :<
