Stephanie,
There is a difference between illegal and immoral, right? There is also
a difference between "against the law" and "against good business
practice."
The site I referenced you to is a "spammer site," which -- although spam
steals bandwidth and server space whenever and wherever it is sent -- is
not illegal.
But those who spam, and those associated with with spammers, do end up
with a lot of "just plain people" and MIS professionals hating them.
And one thing that can be done as a consequence of that anger & hatred
is that filters are put into place.
Many ISPs don't use filters, but many do. AOL is notorious for setting
in filters, and I'm certain that other web-based portals are setting
them in also ... much like Yahoo! splits mail between "mail" and "junk
mail."
That's why I wrote to *warn* your company that your service was being
used by a spammer.
If WebTrends wants to remain associated with spam sites, go for it. But
if you find yourselves blocked from IPs in future, don't say I didn't
warn you.
Your option, your choice, your consequences.
Sincerely,
l.d.
