Neil,

I don't know what multi-boot program that you are using on your computer
(possibly LILO?), so I will confine my comments to the program that I use,
System Commander. Actually, I have System Commander on only my laptop as it
has a 3 GB HD and I have it partitioned into DR-DOS, Linux (empty), and W95
partitions. My DR-DOS partition is further partitioned into a C: (primary)
partition, and extended D:, E:, F:, G:, H:, I:, J:, K: logical drives.

System Commander will permit you to have up to 100 OSes on your computer at a
time. When I boot, I am given a choice of which OS I want to boot to.

The reason that I chose System Commander was because it "hid" other OS
partitions from the "active" partition. With my drive setup and the fact
that I use BATch files to access my programs, preservation of my disk
structure was paramount. Ordinarily, when you have logical partitions (as I
have as D:, E:, F:, G:, H:, I:, J:, K:), they are subservient to other
primary partitions on the hard drive. For example, if you have a DOS
partition with the primary partition as C: and a logical partition D:, then
create a W95 partition with C: and a CD-ROM as D:, the DOS logical partition
drive letter will be changed to E:. System Commander's hiding of the other
OS partitions prevents this "musical chairs" with drive letters. (There was
a Q&A in PC Magazine a year or so ago about this in their "Solutions"
section.) I do not know how LILO handles this nor do I know how other
multi-boot programs handle it, but I am aware that some (many?) do not hide
the inactive partition from the active partition.
