Loud modems!

Greetings all-
Seems to me I read somewhere that you can add a letter or two to the
setting when you set up the modem so you don't hear the noise.  When
using linux and dialing up, the modem is silent.  But when dialing up
with Arachne, it is very loud.  Any tips?
