I'd rather hear the modem noise so I know what's happening or not happening,
as
the case may be.

I, too, like to hear what is happening or not happening when trying to
connect. Because of loss of high frequency hearing, I, unfortunately, cannot
always hear the tones that I used to hear.

IIRC, there is also a Hayes Modem Command to silence the modem speaker once a
connection is made.

Looking up the modem commands for speaker control, I find that:

Ln controls speaker volume
      n = 0    Low
          1    Low
          2    Medium
          3    High

Mn is Monitor (speaker) control
      n =   0  Speaker always off
            1 Speaker on until carrier is established
            2  Speaker always on
            3 Speaker On after last digit dialed; Off at carrier detect.
