Thanks Clarence, Glenn, Sam and others who replied to my message.

It appears that I have done too little experimenting wih "arachne -s". 
In the meantime and with the help from Michal in Poland I finally found
out that the correct setting is TSG4, 640x480, 256 colour, 512 kB.

For many months I've been using VESA, HiColor, 1 MB, and this produced the
distorted images. The screen has now become much faster too with the
correct settings.
