There are two providers of free email and webhosting which offer a
dial-up connection at almost any place in the country: volny.cz and
quick.cz. The price for phone connection is significantly lower
in the evening and on weekends.
I currently use:
PC386 40 MHz with 8 MB RAM and 28,8 modem
PC486 66 MHZ with 32 MB RAM and 57,6 modem
Pentium 133 MHz with 32 MB RAM and 57,6 modem
I have no understanding at all of it, but my observation is as
follows:
1. Volny.cz gets slower in the evening (on all machines)
2. The first two machines have sometimes serious problems with
volny.cz: not always but quite often at times of high traffic.
Typical appearance is that downloads stop, pause 5-6 seconds,
then continue with another even smaller peace, stop again etc.
And it can be impossible to download as little as 25 kb mail.
I spent a lot of time randomly changing modems, configurations,
programs and even phone lines. Michael only confirmed that even with
low end PC and modem he got high sufficient download speeds. I ended
up with this: PC386 and PC486 log in through quick.cz, the pentium
uses the account at volny.cz. Quick.cz is Czech Telecom, Volny.cz
offers better connectivity and more free SHTML support on their web
server.
For Arachne the CPU speed seems to be much more important than the
modem. But this may not be specific to Czech republic.
