I'd hate to see how Arachne would run for me with a slower modem. I have 56K,
would have had 14.4K had that modem stayed healthy. But in fall 1997 that modem
got the habit of dropping the connection after a minute or two, though it had no
trouble making the connection. While conceivably an improved init string that
I got later, after the 56K modem was already installed, might have kept the old
modem running, I rate that a very slim chance. My then computer dealer, now out
of that business, would have charged $25 minimum bench charge just to look at
that failing modem, more than a 14.4K modem, then obsolete, would have been
worth if fully functional. So I ordered a 56K modem from Computer Discount
Warehouse and installed it myself.
56K modem makes a difference with FTP07, or when I am doing a big download with
DOS Lynx386.
I notice Pegasus Mail leaves a wide space after "Subject:", which I copied in
this message.

ISDN would cost $60 extra per month here in Kentucky with Bell South, and that's
only for the phone line, not including Internet service: decidedly not
cost-effective. DSL costs less than ISDN here, and is much faster than ISDN.
I don't know anybody currently promoting ISDN here.
One person I met through newsgroups says he has 14.4K modem and does very little
on the WWW because it's too slow. I will probably never get the chance to see
what 28.8K is like. Even 56K is too slow on the fancier Web sites.
