Neil - This sounds like your master boot record may have been corrupted.
I assume you can't boot to either Win98 or Linux? There is a quick
procedure that will restore a master boot record for Windows, and probably
get your hard disk recognized again, but it will wipe out any dual boot
setup, like lilo, if that was installed in the master boot record. To
restore that, you would need to start up Linux from a boot diskette and
then restore your lilo boot configuration.
To get the master boot record restored: boot into DOS from a Windows boot
diskette. You may need to hold down F8 or the Control key during boot to
bring up a menu of boot options. One of them should be "Boot to DOS". When
you get the DOS prompt, type "fdisk /mbr". That _should_ restore a copy of
the master boot record, and if you then remove the floppy and reboot the
machine, it should come up OK in windows.
