There is no requirement to compile your own code (although it's 
not that hard).  Your chosen distribution will have plenty of 
pre-compiled software for you.  And, even if you need a program 
which uses a different library, you can install the library.  
You don't have to compile nothing.

With BasicLinux I pre-compile everything for the users.  They 
also can use the pre-compiled stuff in Slackware 3.5.  There is 
even an add-on glibc2 library in Slackware 3.5.

You can use bash scripts for most stuff.  They are similar to 
batch files, but much more powerful.  And fun!
