Well then, DONT USE IT. Why on earth would you try to install, then
disable an operating system?
The SurvPC list has a mountain of information on making your DOS as
powerful as possible. There are alternate operating systems out the wazoo,
not the least of which are the many flavours of Linux. Linux Star Office
will open all the documents that anyone might send you from an
office. There's really nothing you can do from w98's DOS that you can't do
from Linux. Those things you can't do from linux have to be done from
within Win$ anyway you shake it.
You can change the Win$ GUI with a few simple text edits if you just don't
like using explore.exe for the job. Look into LiteStep for example, or the
old Progman.exe is still there in the win$ folder from the old w3x days if
you prefer that interface. There are other GUI apps you can locate on the
net for this purpose too.
Trying to install win$ to upgrade your DOS though is unwise as the DOS
included is far less powerful than the older DOS and you can always just
yank utilities off the floppy disk that it makes ("rescue disk") and get
more utils off the net. the DOS with w98 was never made with the intention
that you'd use it regularily and it is really only an underpinning for a
few simple tasks and rescue work.
