  *.ra is the proprietary format used by RealPlayer. 
Yes, I've run across many of those.

  *.snd is exactly the same format as *.au  (basically just 
raw sound data)... do 'cat *.au | *.snd > /dev/audio', 
and they both play just fine.

  Yup.  Not only on the hard drive, but even already in the 
web server directory.  http://wizard.dyndns.org/nirvana.mod
*.mod uses samples which are sequenced to form compositions.
It was a MUCH more effecient way of doing things than *.wav
files and sounded the same across systems, unlike *.midi 
which depend on midi libraries on any particular system.
