Very many thanks to everybody who contributed to my understanding of
this! All very helpful.

   Looks like I'll be trying the ftp server and client method (thanks
Richard & Howard!). We have a completely microsoft-free environment
here, so LANMAN is a nonstarter. I have used the laplink technique for
a long while (much better on parallel than serial) but at 40kByte/sec
it does seem rather slow.... By the way, anyone who uses this might
like to look for FX2 (File eXpress?) which uses a standard
laplink cable (parallel or serial) and also has a handy diagnostic
function for testing the speed of the link, etc.
