Someone (now who was it? d***ed if I can remember) told me that he
downloads the headers only, selects which messages he wants then
downloads just those, while deleting everything from the mail server.

I can't even remember what software he is using. Just thought I'd
mention it.

But I find Arachne's system of letting me browse the index of the inbox
is satisfactory for me.
