It sounds like you have been using a pre-view pane (the default
setting). In IE most people recommend disabling this feature.
Without it there is:- no mail message loaded to begin with; you
can see close to 20 lines at once; and you are less vulnerable to
nasties that might activate when mail is opened.

In addition to CTRL-click try SHIFT-click (click on first line
then SHIFT-click on last line, and all lines will be selected) To
then deselect just one you can CTRL-click on it. >

Yes, you're safer with DOS based stuff.

IE does have a "select all" feature.
