Believe me, i've tried. Some people have succeded running alsa on their
thinkpad 600e:s, most haven't. This comp just refuses to collaborate
with the alsa module. Also, last time i ckecked, alsa used the hardware
mixer to manage it's audio streams, and not all soundchipsets AFAIK, can
do with more than one or two at a time.

Also, not to forget, esd does not depend on either kde or gnome.
