Ok, replying to my own post. I'm wondering if I am missing something
obvious, Damir, (or others) if I am, please be gentle. :)

Out of curiosity, I uninstalled our packages, then just downloaded the
source of scim, anthy and scim-anthy.

I installed them, doing nothing but --prefix=/usr.

They worked the way I expect an input manager to work--with rxvt and
aterm I had to use EUC as I did in FreeBSD, in urxvt it worked with
UTF-8.

So, my question, again, as I am very much an end user here, am I missing
something obvious. I took a quick glance at the scim PKGBUILD, but
wasn't sure what might be different. Is our PKGBUILD someewhat
different than the default, and is there some reason that I'm missing?
I should point out, I don't use gnome or KDE. However, for ~me~ I want
to be able to do Japanese input in some sort of xterminal (for mutt or
possible other notes) openoffice and ooccasionally in a web browser.

Thanks again.
