I'm not sure you can take any anecdotal evidence, and make a generalization based on it. For instance, of the 8 people that I personally know that use Arch including myself, we all use KDE. That certainly does not mean I can generalize and say that everyone using Arch is using KDE. There are lots of other explanations why more gnome users come to the irc channel for support, maybe gnome users need more tech support, maybe the structure of gnome packaging causes more setup problems, maybe gnome users are more likely to use irc.
