I was making generalizations of the 100's not 8 irc users I help/have
helped. Just giving the general feel I see in irc, nothing more nothing
less. I am well aware there are 1000's of users that don't use irc as
well ;)

From doing alot of support in the irc channel I would be more under the

most of what I see is people using something other then gnome/kde and
using gnome as a secondary. As for the quality, I have been pretty happy
with the installed version of gnome.
I'm not sure you can take any anecdotal evidence, and make a generalization
based on it. For instance, of the 8 people that I personally know that use
Arch including myself, we all use KDE. That certainly does not mean I can
generalize and say that everyone using Arch is using KDE.
There are lots of other explanations why more gnome users come to the irc
channel for support, maybe gnome users need more tech support, maybe the
structure of gnome packaging causes more setup problems, maybe gnome users
are more likely to use irc.
There is just really no way to accurately determine which is more popular,
other than to say a lot of people use one of them, and a lot of people use
neither of them.
