I think it's really very simple.

/mnt/ does what it has been doing since day 1.
/media/ handles dynamically added new devices.

Aren't you glad that /mnt/ isn't infested by suprises? I am.

In someways I guess it does make sense but then again it seems like simplification for the sake of simplification. However, when it comes to a nice clean space for DEs and apps to mount removeable media in line with a recognised standard then that does make much more sense.
