I think it's really very simple.
/mnt/ does what it has been doing since day 1.
/media/ handles dynamically added new devices.
Aren't you glad that /mnt/ isn't infested by suprises? I am.

In someways I guess it does make sense but then again it seems like
simplification for the sake of simplification. However, when it comes
to a nice clean space for DEs and apps to mount removeable media in line
with a recognised standard then that does make much more sense.

The "it" as you have used it is not at all clear to me. But for the sake
of clarity:
"I" feel the /mnt standard was sufficient by itself.
"I" also believe that adding a new hierarchy "becomes" a standard given
(sufficient) time, even if it makes little to no sense to add more
complexity with having two places for "mounts".
Also given enough time, the "new" standard makes plenty of sense, in as
much as it is now a standard and folks will get use to looking in two
places. (This is a sad thing to my mind.)
That is why it all seems silly to me, and I am NOT glad about it...
Of course, YMMV.
