Short update. I've reported the slim problem to the devs upstream - they 
said thanks, and they'll work on it when they get hold of a machine with 
xorg 7 on it.
JGC says xorg-clients, which currently includes xdm, will be broken up, 
and one of the pieces will be a standalone xdm. A lot of patching 
required to get the paths right, apparently.

In the meantime, I've got wdm working to keep me going - the package 
from [extra] doesn't work, but recompiling it with --x-includes and 
--x-libraries pointing to the right places does. However, it takes ages 
to start up, and after logging in, xfce takes much longer to start up 
than it did under the old xorg. I'll see if I can dig up anything about 
this.
