Just a few things to note:
I have about 20-25 labels in gmail for different mailing lists. It
pays dearly to 'Skip the Inbox' - you can still see unread counts in
each label.
Also, netiquette typically says that you should bottom-post, not
top-post, as it's easier for MUAs to thread properly. So if you reply
to this mail, move to the bottom before responding - it's not a big
point, but there definately are some lists where people will flame you
to all hell for top-posting. I'm not bringing this up as a flame, but
instead because you said you were new to mailing lists / newsgroups /
etc.
