Another option is vtex (http://www.micropress-inc.com/linux/) which i have used under OS/2 to write successful all my works for the university. Kile seems very nice but editors are even a very subjective thing.-) I wrote since longer time at work (windows pc) all with openoffice and haven't have any problems. Both, latex and openoffice, can export pdf files with references by their own which is definitely more than ms word can. I would suggest two variants. If you have only less time: openoffice.
