Your last sentence is a nice description about the well feature of floats in latex in combination with a boss who likes images more than text.-) You can enhance the speed in openoffice if you use one global document, which is nearly the same as working with include files in one master latex file, and if you have attention on the litte button in the file selector box to use linked images.
