ok we're looking at a 21 second boot time to the lightdm login
manager with rc_parallel="YES" in /etc/rc.conf and around 25-26
seconds without. to the serial console prompt is around 16 seconds
with rc_parallel="YES" and around 20-21 without.

for a 1ghz dual-core embedded processor either isn't bad, and
performance does appear to be improved. the amount of time spent by
the 3.4.104 kernel in initialising hardware (and informing me about
it) does seem to be considerable: around 5-8 seconds of the entire
boot time!
