I saw Om Shanti Om last night and couldn't help but wonder what if ARR had
indeed done the songs and score. Too bad that they couldn't resolve the
copyrights issue.

I found the movie very entertaining. It helps if you can suspend disbelief and
just accept all the spoofs and goofiness with fun. Most of the songs were just
ok but the title song Dastaan E Om Shanti Om was terrific. Orchestral grandiose
(even if overdone) meets a retro sound with 70's guitars and all! The
picturization for it was all stage and spectacle! It's every composer's dream
to write for a showdown like that! Vishal-Shekar acquitted themselves well with
that. I'll have to get the cd just for that song.

My real highlight for the evening was Sandeep Chowta's score. It's obvious that
Farah wanted an all-out emphasis on all things dramatic so there's a lot of
bombast but I was left amazed at the abundant thematic writing and the
orchestrations. Simply fantastic! What a pity that there is no score release
for this!

As ARR plans to release non-mainstream music with his upcoming music label I
can only hope that someday he'll also espouse film scores and convince
producers and music companies that there's an audience for them.

Funny, that... She wanted ARR because of the background score and then she
replaced him with Vishal-Shekhar but nobody is talking about the fact that the
background score of OSO has been scored by Sandeep Chowta...

You wrote Main Hoon Na, and now Om Shanti Om with Mayur Puri. How did the
story of OSO come to you?
Mayur Puri has written the dialogues for OSO. The story just came to me when I
was doing the musical Bombay Dreams in London, which was also about Bollywood,
Bombay Dreams portrayed a clich餠and outdated version of the film industry. I
thought if this were made into a movie and released in India it wouldn't work.
Why did you decide to switch to Vishal Shekhar from Anu Malik (who was the
music director for Main Hun Na) for OSO's music?
A director has the prerogative to work with new people in a film if they feel
it will give a new energy to the film. I wanted to first work with AR Rahman I
though he would do a great job with the background score, but that didn't
happen. After that I chose Vishal Shekhar because it is good to work with newer
younger people gives you a fresh perspective.
