Hi,
So have you logged in to X-Windows (the graphical environment) on the machine?
You have to do this in the X11 environment. Or you can do an SSH-connection
with X11 forwarding (-X switch) from a separate machine running an X-server.
Check you $DISPLAY variable to see that it is set:
echo $DISPLAY
