No kidding! This happened to my XP workstation in July when going from
one patch of the 7.0 User Tool to another. None of the Office 2003
applications worked afterwards. I think I reported it, but never saw any
explanation. The workstation had to be completely re-imaged. Of course,
this conflicts with the instructions that I have been given several
times over the last year from support when encountering an Admin,
Import, or User 7.0 issue, where they specifically said that I MUST
uninstall the existing client tool before installing the new version.
My application administrator's workstation is now in a similar condition
- spouting C++ errors, after uninstalling the 7.0.01 User Tool to
install 7.0.01 Patch 001. It corrupted his IE 7 installation, and is
preventing Office 2003 from applying updates. This is definitely a
serious problem.

Subject: Uninstall of 7.0.x client w/ Crystal may cause corruption of
MSFT apps

**
Hi All,

Just wanted to let you know of a new defect found with the
un-installation of the 7.0.x client that seems pretty serious. Here's
the description:
Bug Number

SW00257321

Description

Uninstall of the 7.x user tool may cause MS Office 2003 or MS Visual
Studio to stop working if the Crystal Reports option was selected at the
time of installation. The issue does not occur if you have not
installed Crystal Reports with the Windows User Tool. If Microsoft
Office 2003 or MS Visual Studio is affected, the machine must be rolled
back to a known restore point or re-imaged to repair the corruption.
This has been found to be a problem with the Business Objects Crystal
redistributable that is bundled with the user tool. The corruption
occurs when the uninstall script of the Crystal MSI is called by the BMC
Windows User Tool uninstaller.

This issue will be addressed in the short term by disabling the Crystal
Reports uninstaller in AR System 7.0.01 Patch 002 WUT uninstall script.
But the problem remains in all previous version and patches of the 7.x
user tool. In addition, an entry for Crystal Reports will still appear
in the "Add/Remove software" section of the Windows Control Panel.
Running the uninstall from the control panel or from a previous version
of the 7.x user tool will cause this issue to occur. BMC is working
with Business Objects to resolve this issue. Until this problem is
permanently resolved, BMC suggests that you do not uninstall the 7.x
user tool and instead, install over the top of an existing user tool.

Thanks,
