That's why I'm afraid to touch it.. one of the main reasons I don't like
touching these kind of fields is that the user_cache table has a mirror
column to most of these fields and I'm not sure how good an idea it might be
to alter that table..

Don't change the size of the field; you could run into more serious
problems if you exceed what it was intended to store.  Instead, I've
found that if you manage teh values using push fields actions, you are
not hit with this constraint.  This is something that changed with the
7.x arserver release.

The db column stores the group ids, semi-colon separated.  The
translation/constraint checks seem to be broken.
