The basic structure of the BMC and EffectTech utilities are very similar. Each
performs these (approximate) tasks:
1. Accept user inputs via spreadsheets (preferably Excel files)
2. Generate text files (*.csv) data files for their specific
command/mappings/staging forms
3. Develop a 'wrapper' around arimportcmd.exe , to actually transfer data from
*.csv (input) to
specific staging forms (output)
4. Provide a means to verify/promote data from staging forms to each record's
new 'home'.
5. Both packages generate a command-line with parameters for arimportcmd; so
all limitations on arimportcmd
apply to the resulting command as well (an actual batch file in the BMC
instantiation)
The EffectTech package has worked for us, within its specific limitations:
- all data is on the SERVER, and command runs on the server. Specifically,
data, mappings, and event logs are in a
designated directory on the C:\ drive (not my favorite practice, but operation
completed with good performance and
no ill effects). This package is configurable to run from the client, but we
have not successfully done so to date.
- the EffectTech setting for 'arimportcmd' creates new records (over-writing an
existing record upon data match).
- promotion from staging-to-permanent-home is automatic OOB, unless over-ridden
by user.
The BMC package is configured to run on the client--and command-as-executed has
not yet successfully read their
mapping files (which are configured components as delivered by BMC--but
modifiable by a user).
The question of location of non-function is still under question--whether this
is an import-tool issue, failure to read
FORM information from server, or other disconnect is under investigation (open
issue with BMC support on this point).
Presumably, new-record vs update-existing is a settable option on
arimportcmd.exe; such option should be
binding on both loader packages as well.
I'll keep this group updates on future developments.

The newly released data loader is in fact a one-time loader - it will not do
maintenance. We were testing the EffectTech utility (free) that did the same
thing, only it did not manage support staff accounts / groups whereas the BMC
utility claims to do so. The biggest problem we have seen is that the new BMC
data loader absolutely refuses to run on our desktops (several XP Pro or Vista
machines) with the 7.1 or 7.1.00.001 Admin Tools against a 7.1 or 7.1.00.001
server. At least the EffectTech beta ran / runs. My understanding is that the
EffectTech advanced utility ($$$) will also be able to do updates to existing
records. In our case we only need the utility to manage about 300 support
staff. I have been pushing in 130,000 customer records separately using the
EIE instances that feed my CMDB, and a completely separate, custom filter
process through a staging form.

** Hi Kevin,
You're correct in that the Foundation Data Loader is really only intended for
the initial loading of data, so therefore will not update existing records in
the way you want.
However, there was a utility that could be purchased for use with ITSP which
does what you're after.
Obviously, this is not going to be any use for you, but I understand that BMC
are currently working on an equivalent utility for ITSM, which should do
exactly what you need.
I'm not aware of timescales, but I very much doubt it's going to be available
in time to help you with your current task.
Cheers....Jo

Subject: BMC Foundation Data Loader
** Has anyone successfully used the BMC Foundation Data Loader that was release
around 10/31? I have a couple of questions.
I am hoping I am missing something but it appears it will only create new
records. Can someone confirm if that is true or not. We have about 200,000
records in our People form and I have a list of about 2000 users that need to
have their support groups and permissions updated. I was hoping to use this
tool to meet this need. I am able to get the tool to create new records but
cant figure out how to update exisiting records, even if I supply the person id.
Assuming I screwed something up and you can update records, I dont understand
what the link is between the tabs, so on the 03 CTM-PeoplePermissionGroups tab
it has 3 columns, Permission Group, License Type and Template Name. How does
it know to put that permission to the user JDOE. I dont understand what the
identifier is.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
