Kathy, Well... any BMC discovery stuff is extra and not part of the "CMDB" per say. The Discovery tools feed data to the CMDB. So if you buy the Discovery tool(s) (and already have ARS ) then you _might_ also get use of the CMDB from there too. (Like instead of buying Service Desk. However, I do not know that for sure. It also could be that the Discovery tools can use their own [possibly-non ARS, possibly-ARS and also non-CMDB] data stores instead of the BMC CMDB too.)
There are "open sourced" discovery tools/approaches out there too. (But to my knowledge none of them integrate with BMC CMDB by default. However there are some interesting integration tools in the BMCDN site that might be of some help.) Things like the following: " HPAC2CMDB v1.2 : This project provides unidirectional integration between HP OpenView AssetCenter (formerly Peregrine AssetCenter) and BMC Atrium CMDB. CWKS2CMDB v1.4: CWKS2CMDB is a project designed to provide uni-directional integration between CiscoWorks(R) Resource Manager Essentials (RME), a network management solution for Cisco switches, access servers, and routers, and BMC(R) Atrium(R) CMDB (Atrium CMDB) version 2.x. " and others... It is always a good idea to make sure you know what you want before you build/buy. Often the scope creep changes the math quite a bit and you might start off on the wrong path. -- Carey Matthew Black Remedy Skilled Professional (RSP) ARS = Action Request System(Remedy) Love, then teach Solution = People + Process + Tools Fast, Accurate, Cheap....
