Peter, You should be able to use any ARS client (Mid-Tier is just an ARS client) with any version -2 ... +2 of it's version. ( Based on the stated compatibility/support matrix.)
So a v7.1 Mid-Tier should work just fine against a 7.0 and a 6.3 ARS server. (If it does not work "just fine" then it is a bug that BMC should be willing to address.) And it should work "just fine" against a 7.5 (or whatever they are calling the version out in Mid-Summer 08) and the version beyond that one too. Do keep in mind that functionality will be limited to the "lowest level" of the versions involved. So a v7.1 Mid-Tier talking to a v6.3 ARS server should work (almost exactly) like the v6.3 client (Mid-Tier). However the v7.1 Mid-Tier should work like a v7.1 client against the v7.5+1(version 8?) ARS server. As far as a WAG about how much disk space the persistent cache needs... I would guess.. that if you export all of your objects in XML format, that number should be close to the ideal limit of the disk space for this feature. However, it likely is larger than that, and maybe as big as 2 or 3 times that size. (Depending on the details of exactly how they are storing/indexing, etc.. the cache. It also could be smaller, but I have doubts about the likely hood of that.) Like I said.. just a WAG. I have not tried to test that question in practice yet. It is also good for you to know that this is not the only type of "filesytem writing" that the Mid-Tier does. It also uses temp files for Reports, log files, and various other bits and bobbles too. And given the smallest disk that you can buy these days appears to be on the order of NN GB. ( or much larger) I think the issue of disk size is fairly mute. Give it 10GB and keep an eye on it. I would guess that the Mid-Tier install is the loins share of the space used for most ARS servers.
