I agree and I think those affected should try taking it up with your respective hotels.. Most of them have negotiated dealings with airlines and they might come up with something to waive off any cancellations or rescheduling costs.. As someone who travels a lot myself I have been able to do such things and even get refunds on flights cancelled due to bad weather although that's generally against their policies..
