Thanks Carey. BMC finally responded to my query and they confirmed that a load balancer is *not* required in order to set up a Server Group. However, they did explain that without the load balancer the clients would have to connect to the individual server names rather than the group name (what I expected).
Now we need to figure out why we are getting plugin server timeout errors.
