The surest way to get it out of the way is to stop your AR Server and then delete it, move it or rename it. Then, when the process restarts, it will start writing to a new file.

If you move or rename the file then you only change a entry in a mapping table (filename -> inode). Once a file is opened the filename has no meaning at all. The RE continuted to write to the file.
