Hi Guillaume,

Usually these discussions are actually about perceived cost of ownership for
AR System and AR System powered applications. If pricing of floating licenses
is of concern, I would recommend working with your BMC sales representative -
especially in the area of the new pricing model called Solution Packs.
Solution Packs provide a tiered pricing model that reduces the individual cost
of a user license as the number of purchased licenses increases. Think of it
as a "bulk discount".

Hi David,

Is there any chance that BMC may consider creating another type of license? As
you said, a floating token is assigned as soon as a query is done. Even in
custom applications, not just ITSM, it is common to have a "workload console"
that displays the tickets assigned to the user when that user logs in, whatever
that is (incidents, problems, tasks, work orders, etc).

If the user refreshes his/her console from time to time, the floating license
will never get released. I have not yet found anybody (management, tech, end
user, etc) that logically or intuitively understands that a floating license
gets reserved by doing a query... Even BMC sales guys have stomped on this
badly.

So any chance to have a different type floating license that gets only reserved
when a submit or modify operation is done?

-Guillaume

Correct - it would indicate when the floating license was acquired. However,
floating licenses are acquired on submit, modify and query... So there's
typically very little delay between when a user acquires the read license and
when they get assigned a floating license - especially in ITSM applications
(e.g. the ITSM console immediately does a query - so the token is quickly
assigned).

But in a custom application where data is just displayed statically for some
time period prior to the user doing a submit, modify or query then yes -
there'd be a delay between when they actually logged in and when the token was
assigned.

I haven't played around with this feature in 7.5 yet - but what you posted
below indicates the license usage is logged by when the license is acquired,
not by when the user logs in.

That implies it would work with fixed users - but I'm assuming users with
floating licenses still do not acquire the license until they try to do a
modify in 7.5 - right?

What you're looking for is also part of the AR System 7.5.00 release
out-of-the-box.

7.5.00 PDF

License management

Current and historical license usage

To provide data for flashboards so that they can display current and historical
license usage, these read-only forms were added to AR System
7.5.00:

! AR System Current License Usage-Tracks all licenses currently in use on the
server when the Enable License Tracking option is selected in the AR System
Administration: Server Information form. You can use the data in the AR System
Current License Usage form to generate flashboards that show current license
usage.

! AR System Historical License Usage-Tracks information about licenses that are
released while the Enable License Tracking option is selected in the AR System
Administration: Server Information form. You can use this data to generate
flashboards that show the following information for specified time periods:

! License usage for a single user, including each time that the user acquired
or released a particular license type

! Number of licenses used by all users for a specified application, license
type, or license pool

See "Displaying license usage" in Chapter 2 of the Configuration Guide.

** If you need only monitor the suer tool the you can use the Init-Form setting
in the ar.conf file to specify a form to fire after login. This only works in
the User tool and does not on the web.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but this is new to me:

We need a method of auditing, in Remedy, the time a user logs in, user
ID, all that sort of thing, including when he or she logs out.

It seems like there should be something in Remedy that does that, but I
can't find it. Obviously, it is either obvious or it isn't there.

        Thanks.
