I wrote up a document on how to do this years ago, but as has been said, it
was just ONE right way of doing it, not necessary THE right way.  You should
do what fits your business and technical needs.  As long as it makes sense
to you and whoever follows you, and does not make upgrades harder than they
otherwise would be, that's all that counts.
