I tend to agree. I recently performed an ARS upgrade for a customer on HD 5.6. We stopped at ARS 7.1 for that reason. I don't KNOW that they won't work together, but I wasn't interested in finding out the hard way. Also check to see if any plugins you are using will port over.
I believe the authentication API changed from ARS 5 to 7 - take that into account as well. We had some minor issues with the Email forms, too.
