Correct - one way to avoid those performance hits with Oracle is to utilize the 
BMC Remedy Full Text Search add-on.  It includes the ability to do case 
insensitive searches among its other benefits.

FTS can, of course, be used with any database - so it could be used to provide 
case insensitive searches within SQL Server (or Sybase, or DB2, etc...) as well.

FYI,
It is recommended by DBA and BMC to not use the case insensitivity feature in 
Oracle. It's possible to take a 50% performance hit with it enabled.

I think Rick might be thinking of Oracle. SQL is by nature case insensitive 
where as Oracle is case sensitive. I believe there is a setting in Oracle at 
the time of install to make Oracle case insensitive. Of corse I am not a DBA 
and could very well not have a clue as to what I am talking about.

That is a database setting. Usually is is only configurable at install time.
