When you run the upgrader it will update the meta data and also remedy version is stored inside the meta data. So you can not just point an upgraded server to older version of db vice versa. It may work with patch upgrade but not with a version upgrade. When we tried to implement oracle data guard it had some bugs and corrupted our db, at that time we ended up DR to a backup server and restore production from a tape and then migrate the delta data to prod from the backup.
