It shouldn’t be a big deal then to change the workflow on development and test 
it and then roll out to acceptance and production.. I would see a weeks work 
max which include code change by way of massaging the def files, testing on 
dev, moving to acceptance and then having the changes ready for production.. 
Some sort of an emergency change implementation..

  Mending workflow using export of defs to an xml file is easy breezy.. its 
almost easier done than said.. that easy..

  Especially in your case since you say it’s a home grown system, I cannot 
imagine there being more than a couple of hundred forms at max and a 2 or 3 
thousand pieces of other workflow at max? Which is almost nothing..
