Theo The use of manipulating strings for instructions has been going on for years. Look at the "Run process" action being overloaded with "perform action". Run process has been treated like a script element, which I would applaud if it meant that workflow could be written with scripts, ie one could write ten lines of script to run with a form (as they can do with HP Service Manager).
Any application that's spending time checking strings for `! or trying to interpret run process strings that may be script instructions, is an application that's going to consume more memory and run more slowly than an application that's compiled script into byte code (ie Python/Java).
