The use of manipulating strings for instructions has been going on for
years. Look at the "Run process" action being overloaded with "perform
action". Run process has been treated like a script element, which I
would applaud if it meant that workflow could be written with scripts,
ie one could write ten lines of script to run with a form (as they can
do with HP Service Manager).

Any application that's spending time checking strings for `! or trying
to interpret run process strings that may be script instructions, is an
application that's going to consume more memory and run more slowly than
an application that's compiled script into byte code (ie Python/Java).
