RESOLVED. Even though the Data Source for HPD:HelpDesk was built with the Instance ID as the unique identifier, I changed it to Entry ID, rebuilt it and the Service Targets, then changed it back to Instance ID and rebuilt them again. And now it works.
Good news: I'm not as obtuse as I was beginning to believe I might be. Bad news: Why did I have to do twice what should have worked the first time?
