Hi Joe, Because most of the companies I work with, that uses Linux, use RedHat, I initially chose RedHat for my demo/testing VM. When I found out that RedHat is only "free" for a limited time (about 30 days if memory serves me correctly), and that you will need to buy a license to get further OS updates, I decided to switch to CentOS, as it is also provided by the same organisation that distributes RedHat.
CentOS is free and close enough to RedHat, and that is why I like it. There are a couple of caveats and tricks when building a CentOS VM to be a Remedy server. I struggled to get it to work initially, but, like Misi, I have found that keeping a "Trial & Tribulation Script" of notes on what worked and what not, helps in finally arriving at a point where you can use that T&T script to build the entire VM quickly, and in one go. I have now built several working CentOS based VM's using Oracle as the DB for ARS v7.1 to 7.6.4 with and without ITSM and even went as far as writing a couple of bash scripts to help prepare the server for Oracle and Remedy installation. My advice: 1) Choose your Linux distro carefully and stick to it. Not all distro's will work (most will require some tinkering to make them work), but let the compatibility matrix guide your choice. 2) Stock up on patience and coffee. 3) Google will become your best friend. 4) Make a backup of the entire VM at key milestone points (i.e.: OS installed and patched, Prepped for Oracle Install, Oracle installed, ARS Installed, etc.) and keep each milestone backup until everything is loaded and working, so you can revert to the previous milestone and try again if something went horribly wrong. 5) Be prepared to spend a lot of time getting it to work if you are coming at it being used to non-'nix servers. 6) Be prepared to spend a lot of time getting it to work if you are coming at it being used to non-'nix servers. 7) Be prepared to spend a lot of time getting it to work if you are coming at it being used to non-'nix servers. (I think you get the message now...) :-) Also, having lots of RAM (16Gb or more) and super fast disks on your host machine won't hurt, and will go a long way towards keeping your patience at healthy levels - especially if you are building an ITSM server. :-) One of the many rewards for getting that Linux VM going, after all that hard work, is having a machine with a free OS, that outperforms the socks off any Windows server.
