Joe, I have a Windows machine with SQL Server Express running an 8.1.02 natively, no VM, and it works fine...the only problems, if you want to consider them problems, are that my services need to be setup to run manually instead of automatically so I'm not taking up those resources when not working with my Remedy server, and it 'muddies up' my OS with things that aren't needed every single day....if I need to rebuild my machine for one reason or another...I'll hafta reinstall everything, etc....if it was virtual...it would be portable as mentioned by Misi and others :)
