Hi Nodje,

My two cents:

I am using LDAP for authentication + MySQL to store user credentials
locally; when I migrated, I created a new database, so I didnt restored
my users; I dont know how it works exactly using derby+fs, or any other
system.

If I am not wrong, the filestore are the artifacts indexed. Try to cat
data/filestore/<whatever>/<hash> and you will see a binary file with
some readable characters (I think those are the metadata).

If you dont want to lose your artifacts, you need to copy the filestore.
Why not to do during the export process? I think it is for performance.
It is faster to tar czf then tar xzf than invoking Java compressor codec
twice.
